Upstream dbus service just opens a new firefox window instead of launching a search provider. Not sure what else is missing, > I'm still investigating. Turned out "browser.gnome-search-provider.enabled" is also need to be set to true in about:config. Now it works for me.
To summarize, current behaviour: 1. When you search something in gnome shell, it launches firefox via dbus service if it hasn't been launched yet. 2. If "browser.gnome-search-provider.enabled" is unset or set to false, then firefox won't act as a search provider, dbus service just open up a new firefox window, then service times out and firefox exits. 3. If "browser.gnome-search-provider.enabled" is set to true, then firefox can act as a search provider, but the first issue is still present. This can be fixed by changing dbus service file (see comment #0) or by changing the wrapper script (see comment #3). And I'm not sure how to inform users about "browser.gnome-search-provider.enabled" pref and if it should be added to defaults prefs. Also note that I've only tested 128.2.0 ESR.
