TigerVNC Xvnc session log

When a plasmax11 session is launched by starting the /etc/init.d/tigervnc.* symlink initscript as root from a VT, some components do not function correctly, for example:

1. Network connections cannot be controlled from plasma-nm applet (an alert is shown: "Not authorised to change network settings" or words to that effect)

2. Pipewire is non-functional: no sound; plasma-pa applet shows "No audio devices detected"

Both of these components function correctly when I login as the user on a VT and run "/usr/bin/vncserver :1" (but I understand this launch method is deprecated by upstream).

In the Xvnc session log attached, there seem to be a number of other components throwing errors, but the above are the only functional symptoms I've identified so far.

My assumption is that something in how the initscript interacts with elogind and sets up dbus session-bus is the underlying cause. Since that is Gentoo-specific work (TigerVNC upstream no longer supports non-systemd operation) I am reporting here, because this configuration is at least *nominally* supported here.

I use SDDM as display manager so that is whose XSession script is in use in these tests; I have not yet tested alternate display-manager's Xsessions, but I'm doubtful they would improve the situation.

Please check if it's fixed in tigervnc/tigervnc-1.14.1-r1.

Thanks!
Comment 3 Robin Bankhead 2024-10-28 18:11:16 UTC
The situation seems improved:

1. plasma-pa is populated (did not have time to check audio functionality)

2. plasma-nm puts up a root password dialog at session start, and does so again when using it to make a connection change (in this instance, starting a VPN connection). Still an improvement.

Method: Logged-in as root on TTY and started /etc/init.d/tigervnc.1 manually.
Comment 4 Robin Bankhead 2024-11-05 14:28:20 UTC
Followup: Yes, sound via pipewire is working correctly in all respects I know to test.

Re NetworkManager, add that besides plasma-nm, nmcli connection commands in konsole/yakuake also trigger the root-password prompt.

With the initial prompt on session start just to get the plasmoid running, this is quite sub-optimal.

New item: kwallet-pam also fails to auto-open my wallet on login. I only spotted this today when launching signal-desktop-bin (I think its kwallet integration is quite recent).

That is quite normal. kwallet still needs your password, and since the session starts unattended, it does not have access to it.

I don't think there is more I can do about this. Thank you for testing it and coming back with the results.
Comment 6 Robin Bankhead 2024-11-05 15:55:51 UTC
OK, I see that - although pam_mount prompts for my password on starting the service so you would think that kwallet_pam should do the same.

What about the NM issue - that surely can't be the same cause as it is requiring root password.
Comment 7 Viorel Munteanu gentoo-dev 2024-11-06 11:29:58 UTC
It has the same cause. I don't use plasma or NetworkManager, so I cannot easily test it right now, but you can try to click the applet after unlocking kwallet (or maybe also restart plasma-nm if that is not enough).
Comment 8 Robin Bankhead 2024-11-06 20:21:19 UTC
Understood. Appreciate the work you did and it does improve the situation, but unfortunately this still leaves too much friction to be viable as my daily-use Xvnc setup, so I'll return to using vncserver (until they finally take that away, as seems to be the plan).

Becoming clear across a number of pertaining issues that I've been raising that openrc + Xvnc + KDE is not a use case that I can expect the overlap of devs concerned to be interested in keeping alive (for reasons I appreciate).
