Description Frank Krömmelbein 2024-04-18 20:15:14 UTC
I am aware that this driver is old and since some time EOL at nvidia.
The nouveau driver works for me too, but with this free driver the GPU power saving settings are not working and the fan is making a lot of noise.

The patches from AUR work for me with Kernel 6.8.7-gentoo-x86_64 and my GeForce GTX 460M GPU.

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-390xx-utils?O=20

Currently, all 6 of these patches must be applied:
kernel-6.2.patch, kernel-6.3.patch, kernel-6.4.patch, kernel-6.5.patch, kernel-6.6.patch, kernel-6.8.patch

Reproducible: Always

Feel free to use them in /etc/portage/patches, but we have no intention to carry/test/maintain patches for newer kernels in Gentoo with nvidia-drivers (unless they're at most very minor), or take any responsibility for whatever may potentially be wrong with these patches -- especially not for the masked 390 which is already discouraged and a security hazard.

6.1.x LTS kernel branch will be supported upstream until December 2026 and old hardware should have little reason to use a modern kernel. Plans are to remove 390 from the tree in early 2027 or so similarly to 340 before it.

If nouveau is not good enough, I'd suggest to get new hardware before then.

x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers: extend 390 postinst to mention kernel

Message does come a bit late (after potential build failures), but
linux-mod-r1 already warns that it's not supported. This just an
extra note about upstream end of support, patches, and just so do
not decide to switch to a newer kernel on a whim.

Users are of course free to use /etc/portage/patches if they know
what they're doing. So there's no hard blocker for kernel version.
