grozin, are you running test suites when you bump packages (FEATURES=test and/or 'ebuild ... clean test')?

This test was removed in https://github.com/wxMaxima-developers/wxmaxima/commit/4120bc52f0ee0c568761b1d993e7d30c2fda1005 (disabled for now) so it couldn't have passed for you I think?

I don't believe in automatic testing GUI programs. We cannot emulate sending sequences of keyboard and mouse events to the program. Even if we could, we cannot check that they produce the expected graphical effects in the program's window. Even if we could, this graphical effect depends on the fonts installed, the window manager used (which can intercept some key combinations), etc., etc.

For example, if I emerge wxmaxima with USE=-webkit, it starts an external browser to show html help files. wxwidgets has some method for it. This method completely ignores xdg-mime settings, and uses its own weird logic. In my case, it wants to use emacs an an html viewer (why??), and calls

emacs file:///somewhere/something.html

emacs, naturally, balks. The hels system does not work at all. Even funnier: in the past I had fbreader installed on my notebook. wxmaxima used fbreader (in place of emacs) for help. It kind of worked: fbreader understands urls, and can display html, but using fbreader as an html viewer is weird. Later I removed fbreader (switched to coolreader, and later to crqt-ng). This wx logic does not fancy coolreader (or crqt), and started to use emacs (in vain). This is why I always emerge wxmaxima with USE=webkit. Then wxmaxima displays html help internally, in its own window. The help system works.

What kind of testsuite could discower all these weird things?

After installing each new version of wxmaxima, I start it and try some simple things (do some calculation, request help, draw a plot, ...). In this way, after installing 23.11.0, I saw that wxmaxima formats questions posed by maxima in some weird way. No testsuite could discover this regression. I informed the upstream, and in 23.12.0 this problem has been fixed. After that, I was glad to immediately remove 23.11.0 from the tree (before anybody wanted to stabilize it).

Command-line programs is another thing. I always run the maxima testsuite after installing each new version of maxima.

The test suite may test non-graphical elements of the software.

You should run the test suite if it exists. If it's useless, then you should restrict it with a note in the ebuild saying why. Or skip some tests if htere's a useful subset.

I didn't say it's instead of testing otherwise...
