Description Marcus Comstedt 2023-04-01 20:44:29 UTC
When cloning a branch and running `bzr status`, bzr crashes on an assertion:

hakua-le:/tmp% brz branch http://mc.pp.se/bzr/amiwm
Branched 126 revisions.
hakua-le:/tmp% cd amiwm
hakua-le:/tmp/amiwm% brz status
python3.10: breezy/bzr/_dirstate_helpers_pyx.c:8114: __pyx_f_6breezy_3bzr_21_dirstate_helpers_pyx_update_entry: Assertion `PyTuple_Check(__pyx_v_details)' failed.
Abort
hakua-le:/tmp/amiwm%

This launchpad ticket
https://bugs.launchpad.net/brz/+bug/1928581
suggests that the problem is specific to Gentoo, and indeed it does not happen in a docker running Ubuntu jammy with the same brz version and same major python version (3.10):

root@122ce0d5998e:/tmp# lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Release: 22.04
Codename: jammy
root@122ce0d5998e:/tmp# brz branch http://mc.pp.se/bzr/amiwm
Branched 126 revisions.
root@122ce0d5998e:/tmp# cd amiwm
root@122ce0d5998e:/tmp/amiwm# brz status
root@122ce0d5998e:/tmp/amiwm#

The launchpad ticket also mentions a Gentoo bug being filed, but I was unable to find any.

I have tested on both ppc64 and aarch64, and the behaviour is the same, so it does not seem arch dependent.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Run brz branch http://mc.pp.se/bzr/amiwm
2.In the created directory, run brz status
3.
Actual Results:
brz status aborts with a failed assertion "PyTuple_Check(__pyx_v_details)"

Expected Results:
brz status completes normally

Comment 1 Sam James archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2023-04-01 20:47:16 UTC
We sometimes get bugs like this which are "Gentoo-only" because we don't build everything Python with -DNDEBUG.

This might be the case here: https://projects.gentoo.org/python/guide/test.html#tests-aborting-due-to-assertions.
Comment 2 Marcus Comstedt 2023-04-01 21:03:57 UTC
Interresting. Yes, if I add "-DNDEBUG" to CFLAGS via /etc/portage/package.env,
then the command does seem to work...

    dev-vcs/breezy: add 3.3.0, enable py3.11, restrict tests

I've given up on adding tests. Yes, we have 29K out of 30K passed.
The 1K failing is ERROR/FAIL, so some of them might be false
positives, maybe something with portage sandbox, maybe with not CI
environment - I've given up. I conclude that it is good enough for
    now.
