Did this use to work or are you emerging it for the first time? Honestly don't get what may be happening, it shouldn't(?) be possible for it to not use the -E from IMAKECPP in the ebuild, they're not shown but all calls look like this (at least on amd64) if I e.g. do IMAKECPP="gcc -E -badargument": DEBUG: 'x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc' '-I.' '-Uunix' '-D__amd64__' '-D__amd64__' '-traditional' '-Dlinux' '-m64' '-E' '-badargument' '-DUseInstalled' '-I/usr/lib64/X11/config' 'Imakefile.c' x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc: error: unrecognized command-line option '-badargument' imake: Exit code 1. - Was x11-misc/imake cross-compiled? May possibly trigger odd logic. - Are you able to compile other imake-using packages like games-action/xpilot? - if you `IMAKECPP="gcc -badargument" emerge -1 media-libs/nas` does it show it was used by failing with: gcc: error: unrecognized command-line option '-badargument' That aside, I'd personally advise against using media-libs/nas (or anything using imake really), NAS still has some degree of support (had a release in 2022) but it's a mess filled with very ancient code and implicit declarations.

Oh wait, I see what's going on, imake's argument splitting is kind of basic -- it's because get_abi_CFLAGS is empty on arm. I'll do a workaround.
The bug has been closed via the following commit(s): https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/commit/?id=3b414dbc1a8f3b4025c9b629a3a0fa3d8e756ec1 commit 3b414dbc1a8f3b4025c9b629a3a0fa3d8e756ec1 Author: Ionen Wolkens <ionen@gentoo.org> AuthorDate: 2022-12-04 05:26:58 +0000 Commit: Ionen Wolkens <ionen@gentoo.org> CommitDate: 2022-12-04 05:38:14 +0000 media-libs/nas: workaround imake argument splitting IMAKECPP normally doesn't support arguments but was given the same basic support as IMAKEINCLUDE which doesn't handle multiple spaces or tab, and an empty get_abi_CFLAGS would result in two spaces without an argument. So use an array and word splitting to normalize.
