Do we need this many versions in tree? There's quite a lot and it makes applying tree-wide fixes for stuff like bug 869671 / bug 878439 awkward. Thanks!
The community likes to play old versions. Refer http://crawl.akrasiac.org:8080/#lobby where versions back to 0.11 are available for online play. Old versions have character species, classes, gods, behaviors that are later replaced so longtime or returning players can play the familiar or nostalgia versions. It's not strictly necessary to accumulate slotted versions, no. It's just something nice Gentoo can provide that other distros can't/won't.
Fair enough. It might be worth putting a comment in the ebuild saying such in case others wonder the same.
