Description chris-gentoo 2005-03-28 03:23:56 UTC
After upgrading to alsa 1.0.8, I find that every reboot I will get no sound - the mixer levels are set correctly (unmuted and volume up), but no applications produce any sound.
The following corrects the problem:
/etc/init.d/alsasound stop
rm /etc/asound.state
/etc/init.d/alsasound start
alsamixer
(unmute and reset levels)

Reverting to alsa 1.0.7 solves the problem.
Perhaps this is related to bug #86744

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install alsa 1.0.8
2.Set sound levels, verify that you can hear sound
3.Reboot
4.Try and play sound
Actual Results:
No sound

Expected Results:
Same levels as set in step 2

PORTAGE_GPG_DIR is invalid. Removing gpg from FEATURES.

Everything fine here with alsa 1.0.8. Must be sound card specific or a misconfiguration issue.
Comment 2 chris-gentoo 2005-04-02 16:08:34 UTC
It seems that reverting to alsa 1.0.7 has not solved the problem as I thought it had.
The problem is reboot specific - that is if the sound is already working doing
/etc/init.d/alsasound restart
does not break it, but rebooting does.

Can you be more specific about misconfiguration, before I initially upgraded to 1.0.8 everything was fine. (I did upgrade glibc at the same time)

I'm using emu10k1 (Sound Blaster Live Platinum).

My sound modules loaded (when working, but I think it's the same when not, I'll check on next reboot):

Comment 3 chris-gentoo 2005-04-24 23:49:41 UTC
This may not be an alsa problem at all.
I just exited my X server (to upgrade) and when started X again (without having rebooted my computer) I got no sound. (from xmms or mpg123)
Doing a /etc/init.d/alsasound restart fixed the problem.

I'm using KDE 3.3.2
Haven't had much time to investigate yet, but I'm guessing arts is doing something to the sound system and the alsasound restart is forcing it to release it.
Comment 4 Jeremy Huddleston (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-25 03:56:14 UTC
yeah, the kde sound server has some volume restore settings... arts is evil. closing.
Comment 5 chris-gentoo 2005-04-25 05:12:14 UTC
It's not a volume problem. I've checked the mixer settings with alsamixer and the levels haven't changed and aren't muted after starting X, but the sound doesn't play even if I exit X which should also cause arts to exit.
So this must be a bug with something, and should probably be reassigned somewhere else, but where I don't know.
Comment 6 chris-gentoo 2005-07-02 22:17:54 UTC
I've upgraded to kde 3.4.1 with USE="-arts" and it seems to have solved the
problem.
