After updating libX11 from 1.7.5 to 1.8, my XFCE desktop no longer starts (black screen only) thanks to funky errors: Apr 30 15:34:37 hho kernel: traps: xfsettingsd[1250] trap int3 ip:7f2a03954577 sp:7ffc538a8280 error:0 in libglib-2.0.so.0.7200.1[7f2a03912000+95000] This happened on two different systems, both of which went back to normal after downgrading libX11 to 1.7.5. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. upgrade to libX11-1.8 2. start X desktop Actual Results: Crash on X desktop startup Expected Results: Successful X desktop startup.
Interestingly enough: using 1.8 and rebuilding glib prevents the trap, but the result is the same: no XFCE desktop. No errors anywhere.

The only commit in 1.8 is https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libx11/-/commit/afcdb6fb0045c6186aa83d9298f327a7ec1b2cb9 which sounds reasonable in theory. In practice something seems to have gone wrong. :}
Just tried to upgrade my stable VM to ~arch libX11-1.8 and started a default xfce4 session (nothing configured). Haven't looked in depth but it gives me a black screen unless I revert to stable 1.7.3. There may indeed be something to this.

No issue here with Plasma (x11 and wayland) started with sddm. No xfce installed. I see everything X related depends on this lib. Will report if I see anything other crashing if I keep the new version.
(In reply to jospezial from comment #8) > No issue here with Plasma (x11 and wayland) started with sddm. > No xfce installed. Haven't seen issues with non-xfce so far, "possible" it's due to a misuse of the library rather than a problem with the library itself -- and this upgrade is just revealing the issue. Albeit there's a lot of old code around using libX11, so there may be more issues to be found.
Ebuild repo commit log led me here. I use xfce4-settings without session (using XMonad as WM) - can confirm some weird behavior with x11-libs/libX11-1.8: whenever xfsettingsd starts, the screen seems to freeze and I can only move my mouse - dragging windows / keyboard input does nothing. However if I SSH and kill xfsettingsd, all my previous window dragging and keyboard input does register. Reverting back to x11-libs/libX11-1.7.5 everything looks normal again.
testing 1.8.1 (masked) without xfce
So this really turned out to be a bug in xfcesettingsd. Progress: https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-settings/-/issues/369 Patch available, works fine.

x11-wm/fvwm-2.6.9 is also affected. It hangs, or just stops responding meaningfully to events, before making any visible changes i.e. framing existing windows. No errors are reported. Backing down to libX11-1.7.5 cures this behavior. I installed and temporarily switched to blackbox so I could get work done. It was not affected by this issue.

Please file a new bug for this issue as we concluded it's a bug in the applications, not libX11.
