Fix spelling of "deprecate"

<@ulm> https://www.gentoo.org/glep/glep-0059.html?rdfrom=%2F%2Fwiki.gentoo.org%2Findex.php%3Ftitle%3DGLEP%3A59%26redirect%3Dno#checksum-depreciation-timing
<@ulm> I just wondered about "depreciation"
<@ulm> shouldn't that be "deprecation"?
<@ulm> the other word exists, but has a different meaning
<@ulm> native speakers, please :)
<@mattst88> ulm: heh, yeah. you're exactly right. it should be "deprecated"
<dwfreed> ^ this
<@ulm> I'm going to file a bug report
Comment 1 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2022-04-06 06:33:40 UTC
@robbat2: Please ack.
Comment 2 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2022-04-06 16:57:08 UTC
<+robbat2> ulm: i really did mean the financial sense variant of depreciation
in that GLEP. They did quite literally reduce in value over time,
to a non-zero utility, but less than initial

[07:30:37] <@ulm> I'm going to file a bug report
[07:31:11] <@ulm> bug 836876
[07:31:11] <willikins> https://bugs.gentoo.org/836876 "GLEP 59: Fix spelling of "deprecate""; Documentation, GLEP Changes; CONF; ulm:glep
[07:31:16] <dwfreed> we use "depreciation" to refer to losing value over time, particularly with regard to accounting and taxes
[07:31:16] <@ulm> robbat2: ^^
[07:32:14] <dwfreed> "deprecation" is "it's old or unsupported, don't use it anymore"
[17:48:58] <+robbat2> ulm: i really did mean the financial sense variant of depreciation in that GLEP. They did quite literally reduce in value over time, to a non-zero utility, but less than initial
[17:56:10] <@ulm> robbat2: I see. I'll close that bug then
[17:59:58] <+robbat2> ulm: if you want me to add an explainer to the GLEP, that might be worthwhile for non-native english speakers
[18:00:08] <+robbat2> i was writing an email to go in the hashes thread
[18:02:18] <@ulm> robbat2: no, I guess it's fine (the glep)
[19:13:59] Mode is +nt
[19:16:36] <@sam_> i think it's going to come up as a typo again frankl
[19:16:37] <@sam_> y
[19:16:41] <@sam_> so if you could clarify it that would be good
[19:17:49] <@ulm> well, if such a thing is needed, then maybe it's an indication that it should be worded in an entirely different way?
[19:21:17] <@sam_> I think deprecation fits far better here to be honest, even if "depreciation" is valid with an explanation of the interpretation, it's going to read every time like a typo
[19:21:26] <@sam_> but yes, if the depreciation word is needed, rephrasing
[...]
[14:22:02] <+rich0> sam_: ++ on renaming to "deprecation" It is a FAR more conventional use of the term. Plus depreciation is something that happens gradually over time. The GLEP refers to "depreciated checksums" and this is really referring to deprecation, which happens by decree in an instant. I don't disagree that the concepts are somewhat related, but using depreciation in this manner is very awkward.
[14:23:07] <+rich0> Even in accounting they'd use the terms distinctly. You depreciate the value of an asset over time. You deprecate an accounting policy/practice that is no longer accepted.
[16:25:23] <@dilfridge> rich0: you need to take this up with robbat2, he said he chose that deliberately
[17:46:41] <@mattst88> I agree. I think the wording as used is very strange
[18:01:51] dilfridge mumbles something about canadian dialect ...

@robbat2: Three months ping.

Taking comment #3 into account, should the GLEP be updated to say "deprecate"? Otherwise we should close this bug.
