Description Jonathan Nicol 2022-03-08 08:09:41 UTC
firefox-bin returns an error and won't start. I do not have alsa (or any other sound system) installed. Worked fine with version <= 96

$ firefox-bin
XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /opt/firefox/libxul.so:
libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Couldn't load XPCOM.
$ echo $?
255

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Joonas Niilola gentoo-dev 2022-03-08 08:44:35 UTC
I've seen iwdevtools report alsa-lib as an unconditional dep, just didn't want to believe in that. My testing has always installed apulse or pulseaudio so haven't hit this yet. Let me try.
Comment 2 Joonas Niilola gentoo-dev 2022-03-08 17:25:48 UTC
So alsa-lib is a mandatory requirement. Trying to remove it via patchelf --remove-needed just results in a disaster and non-working firefox bin.

I wonder what's the best way to solve this. Remove "alsa" USE flag and make pulseaudio/apulse mandatory requirements via "pulseaudio? || ( 1 2 )", or make "apulse" USE flag and always depend on alsa-lib. The first option is more widely used in the tree, but since we use patchelf based on USE flag, switching between pulseaudio/apulse is potentially not-detectable.
Comment 3 Jonathan Nicol 2022-03-08 19:31:55 UTC
I emerged alsa-lib and can confirm Firefox starts now, thanks

    www-client/firefox-bin: alsa-lib is an unconditional dep

     - +alsa -pulseaudio should still pull apulse normally,
       -alsa -pulseaudio won't pull any sound daemons, but alsa-lib is
       now a mandatory requirement nevertheless.

Comment 5 Duncan 2022-03-14 00:29:33 UTC
Just wanted to thank juippis for both the sound decision (ha!) and the exemplary git comment. Sometimes I'm left asking "Why?" or "OK but what does that actually mean for me trying to decide what to do?". This one answered all that and the only reason I needed to open the bug was curiosity as to how it was discovered/reported.

And while I'm at it, thanks for all the effort put into making +alsa -pulseaudio work so smoothly. It'd be easy enough to just say "It's a binary, you get what they ship." and be done with it. I'm a beneficiary of all that extra work and remembering the early days of broken upstream alsa-only support, definitely appreciate how incredibly smooth (at least from the user end) things have been lately! =:^)

Glad to hear! A lot of credit for these ebuilds goes to their original author who is of course our Whissi.

Yes, always happy to see more and verbose git commit messages -- they matter!
