Sadly, mostly same build system and from the changelog the promise of automagic detection of cpu features :( I am not sure if I should be impressed or saddened by some of the options offered.
My own most optimistic take was "well, at least the crazy hacks in the old ebuild should still work," and "we might be able to upstream the ldflags patch now." And of course I'll feel better about stablereq'ing something not marked beta6 for years...
