Description Nikos Chantziaras 2022-01-09 23:18:57 UTC
After emerging media-sound/pulseeffects, updating world with:

emerge -uDU @world

Results in weird errors:

=======================
!!! The following update(s) have been skipped due to unsatisfied dependencies
!!! triggered by backtracking:

dev-cpp/pangomm:1.4
dev-cpp/gtkmm:3.0
sys-block/gparted:0
media-sound/pulseeffects:0
media-sound/pavucontrol:0

!!! Problems have been detected with your world file
!!! Please run emaint --check world

!!! Ebuilds for the following packages are either all
!!! masked or don't exist:
media-sound/pavucontrol media-sound/pulseeffects sys-block/gparted
=======================

Also, the time it takes for the "emerge -uDU @world" to finish is increased dramatically:

real    1m4.862s
user    1m3.595s
sys     0m0.615s

If I remove media-sound/pulseeffects from /var/lib/portage/world, then the errors are gone and it also finishes much faster:

real    0m22.297s
user    0m22.028s
sys     0m0.207s

I have ran "emaint --check world" and it doesn't find any problems. As a test, I have also deleted the world file and allowed portage to recreate it (by using "emerge --noreplace" to add the packages to it) and the problem persists.

This looks like pulseeffects-4.8.5-r1.ebuild is triggering a portage bug somewhere.

I think it'd help to see the full world update output (emerge -p -uvDU @world) rather than just some of it.

Note that the reason it's faster without it in world is because it doesn't have to backtrack at all / it does so less.

I actually think the pangomm/gtkmm thing may be related to https://github.com/gentoo/gentoo/pull/23680 which sohuld be merged shortly, FWIW.

I made an oopsie. I was experimenting with the world file and forgot to restore it first. I removed packages from the world file until only the above errors were left. But restoring my actual world file gives this:

$ emerge -p -uvDU @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Can you try --backtrack=0 and share the output? That said, after a sync (when the change I just tagged this bug with has landed in your mirror), it should work then anyway ;)

Thanks! The errors are gone:

=====================
$ emerge -p -uvDU --backtrack=0 @world

The output without "--backtrack=0" is identical. So it seems it's fixed now.

(The "dev-python/docutils:0" thing has been there forever, so that's normal, I think.)
