this is a proactive approach to Bug 4411

from the patch:
+# When installing static libraries into /usr/lib and shared libraries into 
+# /lib, we have to make sure we have a linker script in /usr/lib along side 
+# the static library, or gcc will utilize that when linking :(.

Looking through the batch of bugs, I'm not sure that some of these are 
actually fixed in stable. Others, the requirements have possibly changed after 
the initial fix was committed.
