Do you use NIS (ypbind)?
Please try glibc-2.3.4.20050125 and reopen if you still have problems.
I tried the version 2.3.4.20050125, but is not working, too. Same SegFault with every graphical apps: X, mplayer, etc...
In relation to comment #1: I don't use NIS
Hello. I'm (not) so happy to announce that this glibc version has _relevant_ bugs. I don't know which these bugs be, but I installed this version in the morning, and now I'm crawling around my filesystem to see which apps don't work anymore. To the previous apps signalled by Josef (these are Mozilla and MozFirefox) I'd add also: Konqueror, that insists it can't resolve every hostname (well, I'm sure I'm connected to the net, since I'm posting this bug report and talking to a gentoo developer).. and also Monodevelop: I can't no more open solutions from any of the voices in the menu. Be sure that when I'll find some other app that doesn't work I will tell you, my dear developer. BTW, I have to add a note. I'm currently running a Gentoo PPC, so this but should be included in ALL architectures. I'll add PPC team to the guys who should receive a copy of this comment.
can you try 2.3.4.20040805-r1 or 20041102? Try to isolate the smallest version jump which causes the problem. Also, can you try updating your whole toolchain and then re-emerge xorg-x11?
I compiled for a while and tryed those versions of glibc: [ I] 2.3.3.20040420-r2 (2.2) [ ~ ] 2.3.4.20040619-r2 (2.2) [ ] 2.3.4.20040808-r1 (2.2) [ ~ ] 2.3.4.20041102 (2.2) [ ~ ] 2.3.4.20050125 (2.2) starting from the newest one and downgrading step by step. Each ebuild, I compiled also the binutils, xorg-x11 and nvidia drivers. The result is that xorg (with nvidia drivers) starts only with 2.3.3.20040420-r2; if using xorg-x11 glx driver it seems to start always. The problem then is to make work nvidia drivers with those versions of glibc, I think... Is it possible that kernel has to be compiled with the new version of glibc, too? I really don't now where to start! Thanks for your work and time
I just upgraded to glibc-2.3.4.20041102-r1 with gcc-3.4.3-20050110 and had an identical problem with konqueror (and kmail, and...) not resolving hostnames. Whilst other programs like ping, or firefox resolved them fine. A downgrade to glibc-2.3.4.20040619 instantly solved the problem for me, with no recompiling of anything.
What about 2.3.4.20050125-r1?
I'm happy to anounce that after emerging sys-libs/glibc-2.3.5 all apps started working again; because for me the problem was with nvidia drivers I emerged nvidia-kernel-1.0.7174, nvidia-glx-1.0.7174-r3 and opengl-update-2.2.1, too! After restarting X, mplayer and konqueror started working fine again. Thank you a lot for your help and suggestion! I'm not closing the bug now because waiting for iago to try the new version of glibc on ppc. Hope it works! Nice weekend, Josef
glibc-2.3.5-r2 is now stable on ppc. We've had no further reports of this problem, closing the bug.
