After doing an emerge-sync and world few days ago I merged the new Xorg-x11-6.8.1.902 and opengl-update-2.1_pre4, and nvidia driver (1.0.6629-r3) and glx(1.0.6629-r4). Since then I cant start X anymore: the only solution was to switch to xorg-x11 drivers with: opengl-update! What happens: When I runx X I see the nvidia splash screen for 1 second then sometimes it returns to VT, but sometimes the screen remains blank; in this case, if I try to Switch to VT with some Ctrl + alt + F* or try to restart X with ctrl + alt +Backspace, the system hangs and keyboard does not work anymore! Tryed with different kernels: same thing! Tryed to downgrade to stable (which worked before) release of X11: 6.8.0-r4 downgrading at the same time opengl-update to: 1.8.2 and nvidia-kernel to: 1.0.6629-r1 but does not work anymore! Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge sync 2. emerge world 3. startx Actual Results: X does not start anymore Expected Results: X should start Portage 2.0.51-r15 (default-linux/x86/2004.3, gcc-3.3.4, glibc-2.3.4.20041102-r0, 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.6.8 Python: dev-lang/python-2.3.4 [2.3.4 (#1, Oct 28 2004, 20:33:15)] ccache version 2.3 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.4 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.8.5-r2, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.9.4, 1.7.9, 1.4_p6 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r2 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.10-r4 virtual/os-headers: 2.4.22 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://linux.rz.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/download/gentoo-mirror/ http://www.die.unipd.it/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo-sources/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 3ds X acpi acpi4linux alsa apache2 arts artswrappersuid avi berkdb bitmap-fonts blender-game bootspla cacheemu cdparanoia cdr chroot codecs crypt css cups divx4linux dv dvd dvdr dvdread encode esd f77 fam fbcon fbdev font-server foomaticdb fortran ftp gdbm gif gimp gimpprint gkrellm glut gpm gtk2 imagemagick imlib ipv6 irda java jpeg junit kde libg++ libwww lzo mad mikmod mmx motif mpeg msn ncurses nls nvidia oggvorbis opengl oss pam pcmcia pdflib perl pic png pnp pthreads python qt quicktime readline real samba scanner sdl slang spell sse sse2 ssl svga tcltk tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts usb v4l v4l2 wifi xinerama xml2 xmms xscreensaver xv xvid zlib" Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS * x11-base/opengl-update : [ ] 1.5 (0) [ ] 1.7.2 (0) [ ] 1.8.2 (0) [ ] 2.0_pre4-r1 (0) [ I] 2.1_pre4 (0) * x11-base/xorg-x11 : [ ] 6.7.0-r3 (0) [ ] 6.8.0-r3 (0) [ ] 6.8.0-r4 (0) [ ~ ] 6.8.1.901-r1 (0) [ I] 6.8.1.902 (0) [M ] 6.8.1.902-r1 (0) * media-video/nvidia-kernel : [ ] 1.0.6111-r3 (0) [ ] 1.0.6629-r1 (0) [ ~ ] 1.0.6629-r2 (0) [ I] 1.0.6629-r3 (0) * media-video/nvidia-glx : [ ] 1.0.6111-r1 (0) [ ] 1.0.6629-r1 (0) [ I] 1.0.6629-r4 (0)

You should still have opengl-update-2* on 6.8.0-r4.
When I did emerge world, xorg-x11-6.8.0-r4 was blocking the merge of opengl-update-2.1_pre4, so I thought, when I downgraded Xorg, to downgrade opengl-update too. Because the downgrade didnt work i re-emerged xorg-x11-6.8.1.902. At the moment I'm using xorg-x11-6.8.1.902 with new version of opengl-update. Should I downgrade again and try with new version of opengl-update? (remeber: it was working fine with 1.8.2)
It should show a 'less than' sign in front of xorg-x11-6.8.0-r4. It blocks lower versions. And that definitely shouldn't happen when you've got 6.8.0-r4 installed. If it does, please attach output of emerge world, equery list xorg-x11, equery list opengl-update
OK, sorry! I was wrong saying that I had xorg-x11-6.8.0-r4 installed! At the beginning I had xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1 that was blocked by opengl-update. When xorg-x11-6.8.1.902 didn't work I downgraded to xorg-x11-6.8.0-r4 (I didn't look for the latest I had installed, but for the latest stable)... What should I do now? Should I try to downgrade to the last known to work? (xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1)
Other problem that I found: when X doesn't start, and screen returns on VT, if I press Alt + F7 my kernel gets an OOPS freezing the machine: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000044 and more info about stack and callbacks!
I resolved (I would thanks Iag0 for the hit) it downgrading glibc from version [ ~ ] 2.3.4.20041102 (2.2) to version [ I] 2.3.3.20040420-r2 (2.2) In fact, the same day when I emerged world, glibc was emerged too... Is this a normal behaviour? I think that bug can be put as resolved... Josef Grunig
downgrading glibc is very unsafe and may cause breakage. Please open a toolchain bug about the issue you're having. Does upgradign to 20050125 solve the problem? What are your use flags?
In response to comment number 10; what do you mean with toolchain bug? Open a new Bug report? My use flags are those defined in my bug issue above. Version 2.3.4.20050125 of glibc is still masked because under testing, I'll wait till it will became ~.
