Rolf, is that an error message which is shown inside mcedit or on command line?
It's a messagebox inside mcedit that I have to cancel before I can do any real editing.

Rolf, could you possibly check if mcedit complains: - still about "en" word list if you change the language to a different one, and - at all if you unset all language variables?
Having not heard back from Rolf I started poking around and I think I have figured this problem out - mcedit has simply got "en" hard-coded as the default spelling language. It is possible to change the language by adding/editing the key "spell_language" in Midnight Commander's configuration file but one way or another it does require SOME aspell dictionary to be pulled in... so let's just stick with English rather than try to make it dynamic, as it will make basic configuration easier to debug in case of problems.
