Though the URL quoted initially has not published any releases, there is a fork being admittedly "*UNMAINTAINED*" but a) having seen commits and b) working for me (as is the currently packaged version by Gentoo); it can be found at https://github.com/DaveDavenport/gmpc/ and https://github.com/DaveDavenport/libmpd/ based on GTK+-3. I'm still using this software and like it, but lack the time to maintain it (and incenctive to work with GTK+-3). Would getting in contact with Dave and maybe him publishing a release be enough to keep the package in Gentoo? I could try to make an ebuild (configure && make && make install works, though -jN has issues).
