Some forum users have been confused by the fact that the install guide is claiming that stage 3 tarballs include a portage tree and a set of kernel sources, completely avoiding the need for network access during this part of the installation. If the intention is to in fact include these things as part of the stage 3 tarballs in the final 1.4 release, please ignore this bug. Otherwise, the install guide should be changed to reflect current reality.
Spanky, Does 1.4 do this? //ZhEN

i think since the 1.4 isnt final yet, somethings are still not final ;)

Is this really a doc issue then? //ZhEN
We had a chat on #gentoo-release (before building 1.4_rc1) and consensus(?) was: * there are different kernels * there are different sysloggers * there are different crondaemons and one of the central points of gentoo is: the user decides... Including one of these things would be drawing a decission, the user shall make for himself... Maybe this info didn't find it's way to the doc-team? Technically it is adding 2 or 3 lines to the build scripts to include this stuff again... ...but i prefer what the docs say: "When emerge system completes, you'll have a stage3 Gentoo Linux system." This *is* before installing kernel, syslogger and crond... I didn't check the docs line by line... Maybe there are contradictive statements in other places...
Nope, there are no contradictive statements. I just went through build.xml and cleaned up the entire document, and I did not see any mention of this bug. //ZhEN
From what I can see in the CVS repo, build.xml, rev 1.35 still needs the following sentence removed from the document: The stage3 image now also includes complete linux sources and a Portage tree snapshot, eliminating the need to do an <c>emerge sync</c> later, but it is highly recommended to do so anyway. </p>
Looking at build.xml, rev 1.35, I believe the following sentence still needs to be removed: The stage3 image now also includes complete linux sources and a Portage tree snapshot, eliminating the need to do an <c>emerge sync</c> later, but it is highly recommended to do so anyway. </p>
i suggest we dont touch it till 1.4 final comes out ;)
Why? If this is an issue, it should be fixed now. I am assuming that the setup of the stages is not going to change, so why wait? //ZhEN
drobbins: can you comment on which this should be ? stuff included or not ?
*** Bug 12696 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I have revamped the docs once again, and unless I am mistaken, all references to the fact that the stage3 is a "fully complete" system have been removed. The guide has been reorganized so that the user is instructed to do an 'emerge sync' before they do anything with stage installs. It is quite apparent that network access is required. Cheers, //ZhEN
