VLC has started doing something odd, as of 3.0.14, but included in 3.0.15, where launching with a video on the cli (or double-clicking a video from my file manager) starts up VLC where the screen / video output is blank, but sound is playing. Having seen reports of similar behavior from some people, I switched from automatic output to try other outputs: - opengl reproduces the issue - xvideo / x11 work - mostly I say "mostly" because what I started to see was that I could switch to one of the other outputs and an initial launch with a file would work fine, but stopping that instance via hotkey or closing the window and trying to launch again would result in the black screen again - where the workflow was: double-click a file in dolphin, quit, double-click the next file in the list. It must also be noted that if I specifically choose the opengl output and start up to get the black screen, my "quit" hotkey doesn't work - I have to close from the window decoration, and then vlc is left running in the background. This background process won't respond to a regular `kill` (ie SIGTERM) and has to be killed with SIGKILL. Whilst this is running, double-clicking another video in my file manager will result in a quick launch-feedback, and then nothing (ie, appears not to play, but this is probably because the new vlc instance is trying to defer to the backgrounded / zombie one, I assume) If I select "automatic" video output, 3.0.14 and 3.0.15 always behave as above. If I revert to 3.0.12-r100, then none of these issues arise - I can select video outputs: automatic, opengl, xvideo, x11 - all with no issues, repeated restart of the application. So this _appears_ to be a regression of some kind. On a whim, I rebuilt my entire system, "just to be sure", and vlc 3.0.14/3.0.15 still behave like this, where 3.0.12-r100 does not. Through all of this, mplayer / smplayer work flawlessly. Marking as "critical" _only_ because the software hangs. I don't lose data or anything super-drastic. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Upgrade vlc to 3.0.15, leave video output as automatic or opengl (though I've seen this happen with xvideo and x11 too) 2. Attempt to play a file - it may work the first time, but a subsequent re-open (or opening another file) will result in the issue 3. Black screen, sound usually plays. 4. Can't quit with the hotkey 5. Quitting by shutting down the window leaves vlc running in the background 6. Backgrounded VLC must be killed with SIGKILL to stop it. Actual Results: Black screen and sound, vlc doesn't shut down properly when the window is closed & doesn't respond to the quit hotkey Expected Results: To be able to play all videos as was the case Yes, the problem persists with 3.0.16 In addition, it seems like the common denominator for files that cause the failure is that they are HD (1920x1080), which matches my screen resolution. WORKAROUND: If I enable the flag to start fullscreen (video settings), then the files play fine. I can come out of fullscreen after playback has started. although, oddly enough, if I start up a file which is 1280x720, even if I set my system resolution to 1280x720, or lower, I don't trigger the issue.
The problem I see in my case is that, sometimes, two windows are opened. One window shows all the controls and vlc menus, the other shows the video. In my case I *sometimes* get it fixed switching some options from the "view" menu... :/

I've attempted to repro with 3.0.16-r6 (current ~amd64) and it looks like the problem isn't there any more, whether I choose automatic video output or opengl (which used to trigger the issue quite reliably).
