I made some quickie ebuilds for x86, pending Luca's work. They're at http://dev.gentoo.org/~spyderous/overlay/media-video/ and they do NOT work with amd64.
Comment 5 HARGITAI Gabor 2005-01-17 15:48:36 UTC
I got this:
modprobe fglrx
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.10-gentoo-r5/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): Invalid module format

The same with manual installation.
Comment 6 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-17 15:58:14 UTC
You're compiling the kernel module with a different gcc version than you compiled the kernel with.
Comment 7 HARGITAI Gabor 2005-01-17 16:09:44 UTC
I compiled the kernel today (I rebooted since then so I have the newest kernel loaded) with the same gcc which I use now. (I use ccache, but it shouldn't be a problem).

Sounds like you need to copy the bzImage to you boot partion and boot with it. You may have changed it while configuring those modules.

Comment 10 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-17 17:13:34 UTC
dmesg should give you all the info you need.
Comment 11 HARGITAI Gabor 2005-01-17 18:13:43 UTC
Yes, dmesg sad:
fglrx: version magic '2.6.10-gentoo-r4 preempt K7 4KSTACKS gcc-3.3' should be '2.6.10-gentoo-r5 preempt K7 4KSTACKS gcc-3.3'

After removing everything from -r4 I can load it at least. I configured it, ran opengl-update ati, modprobe fglrx, but

fglrxinfo
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.1)

Any ideas?
Comment 12 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-17 19:03:05 UTC
Sounds you're running -r5, but /usr/src/linux links to -r4, or vice versa.

As for the other, you need to configure X properly, using fglrxconfig.

Hi folks!

I know that this is not a forum, but sure all people reading this are interested in ATI. So I have a question for you;))
I tried this driver in the hope that it supports my card, but no.
It's a "VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27)", as lspci reports it. It's integrated on an Intel server board. The documentation says that it has GL support, but the driver says no-no, and I can't use some of the documented video modes either. It has 8 MB of RAM, I know it's not much nowadays, but should be enough to run some of the GL screensavers;)

Had anyone success with Rage XL cards, beyond of standard VESA framebuffer modes? Or it's just not supported by ATI, or others?

If I disturb you with questions like this, sorry!
Comment 17 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-18 10:47:32 UTC
The Rage XL is a mach64 chipset. Use X's provided stuff for it -- ati driver and x11-drm. It won't work with these drivers.
Comment 18 viktor 2005-01-18 13:47:49 UTC
Thanks for the reply, but it doesn't answer my question, unfortunately. The ati driver in X works for me, but no GL support, and no high refresh rate, which the chip has according to documentation.
That's all about this question, I think, must live without GL:( Of course, software rendering works, thanks to Mesa...
Comment 19 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-18 13:53:00 UTC
If you have USE=insecure-drivers for xorg, I think you'll get the mach64 3d driver. Couple that with the DRM from x11-drm and you should have everything you need.
Comment 20 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2005-04-26 01:22:15 UTC
the 8.10.12 driver is already in portage and there isn't any new driver around.
