Wait a second, package list is incorrect.

Revbumping to sys-apps/sysvinit-2.98-r1, avoiding dependency conflicts.

Adding missing involved maintainers in CC.

Although gui-libs/display-manager-init-1.0 does provide `/etc/init.d/xdm` as fallback, which works fine, it is *vital* for users to run etc-update after upgrade or they will log into tty after reboot.

Even if they do accept the changes, they may still log into tty unless the new conf.d is reconfigured. Unless the off chance they do have xdm installed, the script will just fail.

Trying to use this "backup" seems like it is just not going to work as people envision. Is it just trying to cover for old documentation on the internet? It is *not* enough to cover ignorant users who just accept/deny new changes in /etc. Yes, there is a news item but I feel it should have focused on deleting the installed xdm if people want to migrate.

/etc/init.d/xdm is provided by xorg-server which this is migrating away from, everyone will have it installed.

Let me rephrase "Unless the off chance they do have x11-apps/xdm installed, the script will just fail."

Sorry but this is wrong. The script does not need x11-apps/xdm to be installed.
The pkg_postinst() takes care of moving your current /etc/conf.d/xdm to /etc/conf.d/displaymanager, so your settings are preserved. The newer xorg-server-1.20.10-r1 also has a dependency on display-manager-init so it is pulled in correctly. Nothing is going to stop working.

There are packages in this list without their maintainers CCed.

Please communicate with them to make sure these versions can be stabilised.

That's fair. Most of these versions are just small revision bumps for display-manager-init, and not really something that needs a bunch of review.

This probably needs an ack, and hppa@ and sparc@ seem to have already stabilized it per this bug.

I guess we'll give it a couple of days for people to respond.

@polynomial-c
iirc sys-apps/fwupd needs some more changes in the 1.4.x train too, I think.
I did not know the details about this package, that 1.4.x and 1.5.x trains are separate and both maintained.

The latest bump for the 1.4.x should use the new init file, it is using -r1 right now, should do -r2

Haven't made new PR as this seems like important package.
