I've been hit by the bug 78368 . (declared invalid because gnumexp is not in portage). 

I sum this bug here:

gnumexp don't see xhtml-mathml-svg-dtd at merge time:

Using config source xml::/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults for schema installation
Using $(sysconfdir)/gconf/schemas as install directory for schema files
checking for public "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1 plus MathML 2.0//EN"... not found!
configure: error: The XHTML plus MathML public identifier is not registered. Please install the MathML DTD.

!!! ERROR: sci-mathematics/gnumexp-0.9.1 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 447, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

Since it was solved by installing xhtml-mathml-svg-dtd from tarball, I guess the bug is in xhtml-mathml-svg-dtd-2.ebuild
