Description John Plesmid 2005-01-01 14:22:38 UTC
I wish to install Gentoo PPC on a Blue Power G3 machine. I have no interest in retaining the MAC OS 8.6 that is currently installed. As best as I can tell this is a "NewWorld" machine. It is an Apple computer - Not a clone.
I have tried both the minimal and Universal ISOs E.G. install-PPC_universal-2004.3.iso
When I boot the G3 from the resulting CD, I get the follwing messages: (I've added the <nl> simply to indicate the end of a line on the screen)
/pci@80000000/pci-bridge@d/mac-id@5/ata-3@20000/disk@0:2,yaboot.conf: Unknown or corrupt filesystem <nl>
Can't open config file <nl>
Welcome to yaboot vrsion 1.3.11 <nl>
Enter help to get some basic information <nl>
Root:

It seems clear that the CD is being booted. The ISO images were downloaded from different mirrors and I get the exact same results on both the minimal and universal liveCD s. I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to sleuth out some solution, but have had no luck.

Can you help uncerstand what the error message is telling me? Is there some solution?

Thaaks very much,
John Plesmid

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot Power G3 with either the minimal or universal LiveCD images
2.
3.

Actual Results:
/pci@80000000/pci-bridge@d/mac-id@5/ata-3@20000/disk@0:2,yaboot.conf: Unknown
or corrupt filesystem <nl>
Can't open config file <nl>
Welcome to yaboot vrsion 1.3.11 <nl>
Enter help to get some basic information <nl>

Expected Results:
I would have expected LiveCD to bring up a linux system, from which I would
then be able to proceed with the actual Gentoo installation to disk

I found the solution to this problem,
The Gentoo Install handbook indicates that to boot the CD one should press
and hold down the "c" key. That DOES boot the CD, however it also results in the
error.
The correct action to boot the CD (which I discovered in the forums) is to:
Press and hold down option-command-o-f keys (instead of "c")
This will bring up openFirmware,
At the OF prompt type:
boot cd:,\\yaboot
The liveCD now boots as expected.
The Gentoo documentation should be updated to include this boot sequence
Please feel free to close this bug as a Gentoo PPC Installation Handbook bug

This isn't in the handbook for 2005.0 yet. I guess, we should make it an FAQ-entry, as only few of these machines are still out and fewer will install Gentoo on it ;-)

But probably the 2005.0 LiveCD will work on that machine, as it includes yaboot-1.3.13 with some more fixes.

Can you test the 2005.0 LiveCD and let us know if it fixes this problem? If not, please reopen the bug. Thanks!

As requested, I have attempted to boot a 2005.0 image, "install-ppc-universal-2005.0.iso", by simply pressing the "c" key. I get the same error as when I originally opened this problem.
/pci@80000000/pci-bridge@d/mac-io@5/ata-3@20000/disk0:2,yaboot.conf

Clearly, pressing the "c" key does cause OpenFirmware to attempt to boot the CD.
If I press "option-command-o-f" (instead of the "c" key) I am presented with an OpenFirmware prompt.
If I then type: boot cd:,\\yaboot <enter>, OpenFirmware DOES boot the CD and yaboot does start correctly. Then I just press <enter> and the liveCD gentoo instance loads and starts as expected.

The OpenFirware version is 3.1.0.

This Blue&White G3 IS fairly ancient, but I found it to be quite servicable. I
have went though quite a few gentoo installs on it and have found it very
useful.

Added to the PPC FAQ. Thanks!
