The handbook section 2.b in code listing 2 shows USEs in /etc/make.profile/make.defaults /etc/make.profile on my system points to ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2004.2 The make.defaults there is empty. It is really the union of entries in parent directories Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Look in handbook section 2.b 2. cat /etc/make.profile/make.defaults 3. Actual Results: The doc says USEs are there. The file is empty. Expected Results: The doc should have explained about visiting the parents

Well, although it has something to do with the cascading profiles, I do believe we need to adjust this part in the handbook.
