Hi,

Following emerge @system/@world because of GCC update, =sys-libs/efivar-37 now fails to link on my ia64 workstation, though the root cause is unclear from the log files. This isn't a GCC regression, as switching back to the previously used GCC compiler doesn't help.

Comment 5 Sergei Trofimovich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2020-10-18 21:00:18 UTC
Confirmed on guppy. binutils-2.34 works, binutils-2.35.1 fails.
Comment 6 Sergei Trofimovich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2020-10-18 21:06:41 UTC
Looks like it's a side-effect of -specs=/var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/efivar-37/work/efivar-37/gcc.specs trying to inject '-z relro' (removing it from spec removes an error).

This probably means that

> /usr/lib/gcc/ia64-unknown-linux-gnu/10.2.0/../../../../ia64-unknown-linux-gnu/bin/ld: warning: -z relro ignored

is treated as error instead of warning.
Comment 7 Sergei Trofimovich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2020-10-18 21:18:36 UTC
Ah, it comes from efivar/src/include/gcc.specs: %{!static:--fatal-warnings}.

It's a -Werror equivalent for linker. Probably should be removed or spec file to be fixed not to user relro on some targets.
Comment 8 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2020-10-19 16:32:48 UTC
The problem does not occur on amd64, so I assume this behavior is specific to the ia64 linker.

Please report the problem upstream.

https://patch-diff.githubusercontent.com/raw/rhboot/efivar/pull/164.patch should drop the warning.

Émeric, can you check if it helps to build sys-libs/efivar and produce working bootloader?

Thanks for the patch Sergei.

Yes, it does allow to successfully compile/link sys-libs/efivar and produces /usr/bin/efivar binary that seems to work as expected.

Just a question: Isn't dropping fatal warnings a little bit unsafe? Maybe for the other non-exotic platforms? If I understand correctly, the issue is with -z relro here. Wouldn't it be safer to drop this argument (though I don't know its exact purpose, I recognize)?
Comment 11 Sergei Trofimovich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2020-10-19 22:20:25 UTC
I would say turning blanket warnings to errors is useful for development. But not for final releases. Enabling more specific warning to errors is usually less fragile.

'-z relro' is interesting: it's default-on for binutils for quite a while (where implemented). So it might be ok to drop the option entirely from the spec.

binutils could be compiled with --disable-relro to override the default. But perhaps it's not important to move relocations out to a separate page for efivar specifically.

Any solution should be fine for ia64 as it does not implement relro. Not sure about the other targets.
Comment 12 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2020-10-19 23:18:02 UTC
Please feel free to push the patch in Gentoo.

sys-libs/efivar: drop -Werror equivalent for linker

ia64's ld does not implement '-z relro'. This means
    'z relro --fatal-warnings' always fails on ia64.

    The change drops '--fatal-warnings'.

I have the same problem with efivars-38 on ~amd64, I don't know if it'a regression or a different bug since previously was stated that amd64 wasn't affected
