I updated the influxdb installation on my system to influxdb-1.8.1. With the init script delivered from portage, influxdb could not be started. I have the same issue. I can start Influxdb as influxdb user with the given options from command line. It works as expected and it is even creating a PID file but it won't do it when using the provided init script. The fix with pid removal works for me as well but i don't think this is a good option.
I upgraded my InfluxDB installation to 1.8.1 today and began encountering the same issue after the service was restarted due to a reboot. I'm hit by this bug as well. Workaround works... but it definitely doesn't look a good way to "fix" it.
