Description Aisha Tammy 2020-06-14 13:18:04 UTC
Currently the official discord server located at https://discordapp.com/invite/gentoo does not have enough moderation upto the standards raised by IRC and the forums.

Some of the things that can be done to improve
* add a proper code of conduct
* enforce the coc
* have moderation staff

Some of the things to deal with proper moderation and low amounts of devs on discord
* volunteer moderators
* add at least two voluteers in different time zones for each channel
* enforce topics per channel

Comments?

Alice, is this channel still actively supported?
Comment 2 Michael Crawford (ali3nx) 2020-06-20 08:46:56 UTC
I've been rather active in recent months in this gentoo discord have been a gentoo veteran for many years so perhaps i could add comments to this.

There are two support channels, two voice and streaming capable channels and the social channel among many others that are used frequently and they do get used frequently.

The main chat social channel is occasionally used for user support when it;s not an inconvenience to anyone else discussing issues or concerns socially.

Users from the gentoo telegram channels also frequent discord and do help and support users and vice versa.

Yes there are largely no moderation staff anyone is aware of or a code of conduct however in the perhaps at least six months i've been using gentoo discird chat the option of having a comunnity interest moderated chat available has worked well.

If the intention was to enforce a code of conduct on chat similar to the main gentoo irc channel on freenode where only support related discussions are welcome i doubt that will be a welcomed change.

The chat channels related to the purpose they are desirable for is quite often mature and well behaved as is Telegram gentooo chat channels.

At present largely nobody publically knows who the discord server owner role is assigned to but ryao@g.o has been active in chat and can set the channel topics and he's a proper gentoo developer.

Observing perspective between freenode where irc chat is more "formal", discord and telegram some users greatly prefer ether the features discord or telegram provides or the more casual environment.

Many users of discord have reported having never used irc chat. Not even once.

Despite that realization both discord and telegram chat accomplish and provide significant value to many gentoo users.

The telegram chat for example I was informed was founded by Sakaki

Topic enforcement isn't a requirement, but all Gentoo communications mediums and any outside group using the Gentoo name or logo are required to follow the CoC.

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Council/Code_of_conduct

https://www.gentoo.org/inside-gentoo/foundation/name-logo-guidelines.html

If this discord is official it should follow the CoC because it is binding on all community members.

If it isn't official then it needs to abide by the name-logo guidelines as any outside org must, because Gentoo is a trademark that belongs to the Foundation and it only licenses its use in accordance with the guidelines, and any other exceptions they might grant.

The CoC isn't particularly onerous. It doesn't say you aren't allowed to talk about stuff other than Gentoo support. It does set a pretty minimal baseline on conduct though (relatively non-specifically). IMO it is mostly just good advice for any community.

A lot of people seem to knee-jerk about CoCs without actually reading ours. IMO the Gentoo one is pretty tame.

thank you. that discord chat is electively unmoderated and can get pretty toxic.

reassigned to cynede as the owner of discord server.

Given the complete lack of response, it's probably best if we disavow the server and remove the links from official pages.

Hello, I didn't understood what's current problem, please contact me on IRC or write here with more details (exact actions).

We have Gentoo CoC (or possibly slightly adopted for discord) one on server, we even enforce people to accept it and we're trying to follow it there, we have several developers with admin rights and some moderators.

@dilfridge I'd ask you to get it back on wiki until it will be clear what changes exactly should be done.

I'm also sorry for late response.
Comment 9 Cynede (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2020-08-05 07:44:14 UTC
Note that Official status for this discord server was discussed many times before already, there was too much flame, including flame beyond developers.

I don't want to continue that flame again and I've started ignoring people who "attack" me trying to pull down official status so honestly I'd prefer to redirect all those question to someone form Infa and label it as conflict because answers I give doesn't work for those people.

https://bugs.gentoo.org/818214 here's a report I just submitted related to this topic. Apparently several people are getting banned by a moderator for reasons that aren't clear. This might be something to look into since there's been some issue relating to moderator power.

I do occasionally use Discord. While I'm against closed and siloed systems generally speaking, it is probably a good idea to get the PR team involved again at some level - especially if members of the community are coming to our bug tracker to report issues...

I'll reach out on the Discord channel and (reluctantly) reengage with that 'community' with the goal to avoid negative situations in the future.
Comment 12 Matthew Marchese Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev 2022-07-16 18:44:38 UTC
It would seem Cynede has the only admin account for the Gentoo "server" on Discord. He's currently offline with no ETA on returning, so waiting is an option...
Comment 13 Matthew Marchese Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev 2022-07-23 04:16:19 UTC
As of today Cynede has promoted me to admin on the Discord Gentoo "Server", which is viewable here:

https://discord.com/channels/249111029668249601/910446729181143120/999936276969046026

I'll republish this as an "official" support channel via the PR project wiki page. I'll look into referencing the Name and Logo Guidelines, since I believe that link is missing from the server.

If anyone other current developers use Discord, please let me know and you can help moderate at least and/or become admin as well.

Thank you, Cynede!
