I can confirm this bug and may add that till now I had never changed or touched any of the configs in the /etc/texmf and only had updated all those packages as new versions came along in time... Anyway I am not an expert on all this texlive/lua etc. stuff and do not know if this is the proper way to fix the issue, but it worked for me, so I wanted to share with all that have the problem...: 0. I assume you had already updated to app-text/texlive-core-2020-r3 1. Edited the /etc/texmf/texmf.d/80jadetex.cnf font_mem_size.latex= 400000 to font_mem_size.latex= 800000 I did this because one of the errors was that there was not enough font memory 2. fmtutil-sys --all && texmf-update Although fmtutil-sys --all is part of the commands in texmf-update... i did it exclusively just in case :) 3. emerge -C dev-texlive/texlive-latexrecommended This 2019 package gave file collisions with the dev-texlive/texlive-latex 2020 4. emerge -v dev-texlive/texlive-latex 5. emerge -avuND --keep-going y world All this fixed the error and managed to update all the other dev-texlive/texlive-* packages that were failing before. BTW as every other time the new tex update to 2020 didn't go at all smooth... Sadly
PhobosK - I can confirm that your fix worked for me. Thank you! I did see the error for font_mem_size, but failed to find the config file that contained it. Like you, I've never touch any configs with these packages, since they just get pulled in by other packages.
I can confirm that PhobosK's fix in comment 3 also worked for me. I suspect that unmerging texlive-latexrecommended is not required if the 2020 version has been emerged using --nodeps.

Nice catch, I didnot think of updating jadetex at all, it must be in sync with a kpathsea config mostly.

@zlogene you should revbump jadetex otherwise it will keep failing for the vast majority of people that will not think about rebuilding jadetex and you will keep seeing new bugs & dupes. also, I think it is probably better to remove entirely the '% latex settings' part of that jadetex.cnf file; IIRC it was there to increase defaults; if those are higher nowadays then they don't need to be there and will avoid future similar bugs

After reading this report (that is, after the other report was marked as duplicate of this one), the solution for me was actually to remove `app-text/jadetex`. Nothing on my system depends on it, and I am not exactly sure how it sneaked in my system... probably a build-only dependency. But apparently if it is there, `app-text/texlive-latex` uses it even without the `jadetex` USE flag. I suppose this also explains while `app-text/jadetex` was not rebuilt by portage after the update.
