Description Paul Gover 2020-03-21 18:25:19 UTC
Minding my own business, updating my kernel from 5.4.12 to first 5.5.8, and when that didn't work, 5.5.10/

First got undefined symbol __devm_regmap_init_i2c in sbs-charger. Managed to get rid of that by enabling gpio support and then more bits of sbs in drivers/power/supply. That got the "make -j3" to work.
But then "make_modules_install" complains about arch/x86/crypto/aesni-intel.ko "No such file or directory". Which is fine, I didn't ask for it and don't particularly want it!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. cp ../linux/.config .
2. make oldconfig
3. make -j3
4. make modules_install
Actual Results:
Despite the kernel configuration being OK - or at least,
make nconfig is happy,
weird errors as above.

This looks similar to bug 713460 except it's for a different module.
Did someone in kernel-land take a half day and skip testing?

I'll past my .config as well as emerge --info

Select REGMAP_I2C for CHARGER_SBS

Can you test this patch against the latest 5.5.X gentoo-sources which is gentoo-sources-5.5.14 as of this writing?
Comment 4 Paul Gover 2020-04-03 15:56:30 UTC
Mike,
Sorry for the delay; I have a weird setup that needed a different update first.

cd /usr/src/linux-5.5.14
patch -p1 < ~/Desktop/2

and it uses fuzz 2 to dump it in the middle of
config BATTERY_DS2782

which ain't remotely like CONFIG_SBS

I also tried on 5.5.13, the one I reported the bug on, and that put it too far past the right config section.

I'm amazed how bad "patch" is. It turns out it's being confused by spacing and tabs. A correct version has 8 spaces before each keyword, and one tab, 2 spaces before the help line.

Current kernel is now 5.6.2. It's CONFIG_SBS section is already right, so the patch fails, but you probably knew that as you asked me to try on latest 5.5. It builds successfully after
cp ../linux/.config .
make oldconfig
make j3

Version 5.5.14 also builds correctly with the fixed patch, attached.

Drat! The same problem appears to exist in both 5.6.2 and 5.6.3. I must have goofed when I tested 5.6.2. Mike, can you reopen please?
