I have taken the topic upstream now. Please note that the patches there are in draft state and not be meant to be copied to Gentoo before a future revision of them has been merged upstream.
Needs (a) a new upstream release and a downstream bump or (b) a downstream backport of pull request 37 now. Current plan is to wait a bit for a new release.
