I do not run revdep-rebuild often (how things have changed over the years!), but running it today rebuilt nvidia-drivers. Then I ran it again (back-to-back), and it rebuilt nvidia-drivers again. Needless to say, I would not expect it to rebuild the package successfully but retain the dependency problem.

Relevant package versions:
gentoolkit-0.4.6
nvidia-drivers-440.36-r1

/etc/portage/package.use:
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers -abi_x86_32 -tools

Hello,

Just wanted to add a +1 to this issue. It has been happening to me for probably the last six months.

It always re-merges x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-450.57. Once it finishes, if I run it again immediately, it will do the same. Just to cross-check it, I ran revdep-rebuild.sh. It did the same.

When launching the .sh version, it tells me:

* Generated new 3_broken.rr
 * Assigning files to packages
 *   /usr/lib/libGLX_nvidia.so.450.57 -> x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers
 *   /usr/lib/libnvidia-fbc.so.450.57 -> x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers
 *   /usr/lib/libnvidia-ifr.so.450.57 -> x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers
 *   /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so.450.57 -> x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers
 * Generated new 4_raw.rr and 4_owners.rr
 * Cleaning list of packages to rebuild
 * Generated new 4_pkgs.rr
 * Assigning packages to ebuilds
 * Generated new 4_ebuilds.rr
 * Evaluating package order
 * Generated new 5_order.rr
 * All prepared. Starting rebuild

I noticed when I run the .sh version, at the end it tells me:

 * QA Notice: Unresolved soname dependencies:
 *
 *      /usr/lib/libGLX_nvidia.so.450.57: libX11.so.6 libXext.so.6
 *      /usr/lib/libnvidia-fbc.so.450.57: libGL.so.1 libX11.so.6 libXext.so.6
 *      /usr/lib/libnvidia-ifr.so.450.57: libGL.so.1 libX11.so.6
 *      /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so.450.57: libX11.so.6 libXext.so.6
 *

Which might be why it is looping... Might actually be a bad ebuild?

When ever revdep-rebuild comes across binary drivers like nvidia, it inevitably ends up with unresolved links which it will keep wanting to rebuild.

The way to fix it is to add those broken files to the /etc/revdep-rebuild/ excludes directory. You will likely find several packages there to use as examples.

Then you file a bug with the package maintainer to add the exclude to the package's installed files.

But I'll add the maintainer to this bug so they can do it.

With these USE flags set:

> /etc/portage/package.use:
> x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers -abi_x86_32 -tools

these should not be installed:

>  * Broken files that require: libXext.so.6 (32 bits)
> 	* /usr/lib/libnvidia-fbc.so.440.36
> 	* /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so.440.36
> 	* /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGLX.so.0

> 	* /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGLX.so.0
> 	* /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGLX_nvidia.so.440.36

I.e. with USE=-abi_x86_32 you should not see libraries installed in /usr/lib.

What you say sounds very reasonable. Maybe the files shouldn't be installed... but they are. They're not orphaned either. Since submitting this bug report, the files have been updated to version 450.57, although the exact files listed by revdep-rebuild have changed:

 * Broken files that require: libX11.so.6 (32 bits)
	* /usr/lib/libGLX_nvidia.so.450.57
	* /usr/lib/libnvidia-fbc.so.450.57
	* /usr/lib/libnvidia-ifr.so.450.57
	* /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so.450.57
 * Broken files that require: libXext.so.6 (32 bits)
	* /usr/lib/libGLX_nvidia.so.450.57
	* /usr/lib/libnvidia-fbc.so.450.57
	* /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so.450.57
 * Broken files that require: libGL.so.1 (32 bits)
	* /usr/lib/libnvidia-fbc.so.450.57
	* /usr/lib/libnvidia-ifr.so.450.57
 * Assign files to packages
	* /usr/lib/libGLX_nvidia.so.450.57 -> x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-450.57
	* /usr/lib/libnvidia-fbc.so.450.57 -> x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-450.57

It looks like multilib.eclass is used incorrectly in the nvidia-drivers ebuilds. Particularly where get_install_abis is called only the 64-bit "default" should(?) be returned, but apparently it returns all ABIs regardless so that can't be the right multilib.eclass function to call.

This is where I injected an einfo at the start of src_install-libs():

My understanding is that multilib.eclass does not introduce or use ABI_X86="" USEs. It only provides a way to reconfigure CC and friends using ${VAR}_${ABI} flags. get_install_abis() is used by packages that don't provide a ABI_X86="" configuration option, like glibc or gcc. They use USE=multilib instead.

The actual ABI_X86="" filtering happens in multilib-build.eclass (via multilib-minimal.eclass).

The following should do the right thing:

    x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers: Use multilib_get_enabled_abis

    revdep-rebuild{,.sh} complain about missing dependencies for
    nvidia-drivers' 32-bit libraries when USE=-abi_x86_32 because in that
    case MULTILIB_USEDEP does not require those to install 32-bit libraries,
    but nvidia-drivers' 32-bit libraries get installed anyway.

    This happens because the ABI check that determines whether to install
    those 32-bit libraries incorrectly uses the eclass function
    get_install_abis from multilib.eclass instead of
    multilib_get_enabled_abis from multilib-build.eclass.

    Thanks to slyfox for the patch.

Thank you for the fix. I can confirm that revdep-rebuild is now satisfied.
