All versions of kmod in ::gentoo are above 18.  I'm not sure how this was triggered.

Oh, I get it! It's a multilib ebuild and the check dies on the ABI_X86_32 build. The eclass (linux-mod) does not add a MULTILIB_USEDEP dep.

EAPI=8 does not allow default in pkg_setup phase.  Looks like the eclass needs multilib support.
