Description Jan-Matthias Braun 2019-12-03 17:42:55 UTC
For all fwupd-1.3-versions, I am missing devices. On one device, I am seeing "No detected devices" for get-devices, on another one, I am only seeing the bios.

A logitech unifying receiver, which I updated with earlier versions, is not recognised anymore, on both machines.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Updating fwupd to version 1.3.5 (or one of the other 1.3 versions)
2. Call fwupdmgr get-devices ore refresh
Actual Results:
Refresh / get-devices reports: "No detected devices"

Expected Results:
A list f devices, at least the unifying receiver, but also a bunch of other devices like NVME, ssd, or system firmware, should have been reported.

When starting fwupd with --verbose, a series of error messages is printed which was not printed with the 1.2 version.

XbSilo compiling /usr/share/fwupd/quirks.d/ata.quirk:ctime=1575393821.492587…
FuQuirks failed to build silo: failed to compile /usr/share/fwupd/quirks.d/ata.quirk:ctime=1575393821.492587: cannot process content type chemical/x-turbomole-vibrational

I have found no combination of USE flags which change this behaviour. But as other people seem to have better luck with version 1.3, I assume this to be a specific option of my systems.

Comment 1 Jan-Matthias Braun 2020-01-01 17:52:09 UTC
Short update: still the same behaviour with 1.3.6.
Comment 2 Jan-Matthias Braun 2020-01-06 13:04:54 UTC
Alright. I got the following two puzzle pieces.

1. Extensive debugging info revealed the following message:
12:57:51:0859 FuQuirks failed to build silo: failed to compile /usr/share/fwupd/quirks.d/ata.quirk:ctime=1577992034.660411: cannot process content type chemical/x-turbomole-vibrational

Deleting ata.quirk just repeated the same message with another quirk file. I.e., it looks like the mime type broke silo building.

When uninstalling sci-chemistry/chemical-mime-data, this message disappears.

2. Now I can
/usr/libexec/fwupd/fwupdtool get-devices
and I will see all devices.

I can also use
/usr/libexec/fwupd/fwupdtool update

Using fwupdmgr get-devices, I only see a subset of the devices. But since a fwupdtool update I also see the unifying receiver.

fwupdmgr refresh seems to work as intended. Also update seems to work, but probably only on the subset of devices which is also shown with get-devices.
Comment 3 Jan-Matthias Braun 2020-01-06 13:08:18 UTC
It becomes even more interesting. After the unifying receiver update, I restarted fwupdmgr and now I am seeing the full list of devices? I thought I had restarted fwupdmgr after uninstalling chemical-mime-data, but I guess that uninstalling chemical-mime-data was all it needed.
Comment 4 Markus Kaindl 2020-01-29 16:13:21 UTC
Problem is already known upstream and they blame it on chemical-mime-data:

https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/issues/1631
Comment 5 Markus Kaindl 2020-01-29 19:05:32 UTC
I created a Bugreport for sci-chemistry/chemical-mime-data for gentoo (https://bugs.gentoo.org/707284) and upstream (https://github.com/dleidert/chemical-mime/issues/1). I also attached a Patch to the gentoo-bug fixing this problem.
