Description Daniel Frey 2019-09-23 16:27:45 UTC
This is a major upgrade to mythtv, and there are some major changes to how it works. Most likely these should be a news item or a warning in the ebuild.

1. The backend now sources /var/lib/mythtv/.mythtv for its configuration but there was no mention of this anywhere. Previously sources /home/mythtv/.mythtv

2. Hardware accelerated H.265/HEVC decoding with VDPAU is not available in mythtv-30.x, if it is needed in your use case they recommend staying on 29.x

3. MythTV treats and configures the HDHomerun tuners very differently. I noticed the new USE-flag and set it, but this will cause tuners to stop working on upgrade.

The latter two are mentioned here: https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Release_Notes_-_30

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade an old 29.x install
2. Try starting mythbackend

Actual Results:
rc-status reports a crash

This confused me at first because it works on my system. Would this wording make it less confusing?

2. Hardware accelerated H.265/HEVC decoding with VDPAU now uses system libraries. Internal support is removed from mythtv-30.x, if it is needed in your use case they recommend staying on 29.x
