I added the ebuild when in the games group as it is a dependency of freecol. I'm not more interested on it.

ran into this when trying to emerge freecol

following a hint on stackoverflow i ran 

JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS=-Dfile.encoding=UTF8 emerge -av freecol

and cortado installed just fine. Hope this helps.
