When using https://github.com/workspace-grid/workspace-grid extension, mutter animates changes in workspaces always vertically. This is a known bug, filed at https://github.com/workspace-grid/workspace-grid/issues/104 and is fixed upstream by https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/commit/92cccf53dfe9e077f1d61ac4f896fd391f8cb689 available as a patch at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/uploads/73ac4a8bafffb637e3f3f6510fc7027e/0001-Allow-workspace-layout-to-be-overridden.patch When compiling mutter-3.30.2-r1 together with this patch, I can confirm that it fixes the issue. Please include this patch until upstream releases will catch up.
