I have asked upstream if we can get a new gkrellm release... Let's wait for his reply.

Is there a problem to apply this trivial fix to the gentoo build meantime?

Technically, no, there's no problem applying this "trivial" fix.
But current gkrellm git HEAD contains lots of valuable fixes that justify a new release. Your bug report encouraged me to have a look over all the commits that were done since 2.3.10 release and IMHO a new release is long overdue.

Meanwhile I've added a gkrellm-9999 live ebuild so you can use that to get your desired fix.
If there won't be a new release soon, I am going to cherry pick all the good fixes from git and do a new revbump.
