since it worked when i tried a second time I guess this is a parallelity issues (I'm doing -j20).

I see that also Fedora disables parallel build as it can randomly produce bad output for some files: # don't attempt parallel builds, they tend to produce bad output without # failing make https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gimp-help/blob/master/f/gimp-help.spec
