OK, I can lastrite it. I use reduce all the time, it is powerful and reliable (and also fast). But I compile it outside portage. The ebuild in the tree breaks lots of QA rules; writing a better ebuild requires serious rewriting of their build system, it's a lot of work. And, of course, newer versions appear every few months, the one in the tree is not interesting to anybody.
