Description Anton Gubarkov 2018-10-20 21:24:49 UTC
my GDM fails to start a graphical login screen. The text console stays.

the journal is full of :

It is similar to https://bugs.gentoo.org/547146, but that was 3 years ago...

gnome-base/gdm-3.26.2.1-r1::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="branding introspection ipv6 tcpd -accessibility -audit -fprint -plymouth (-selinux) -smartcard -test -wayland -xinerama" ABI_X86="(64)"
Comment 2 Anton Gubarkov 2018-10-24 08:53:55 UTC
I managed to find out the reason myself.
I've build a system w/o wayland support. I'm very much disappointed with wayland performance (speed) and certain use cases with virt-viewer (keyboard handling). So I disabled wayland use flag entirely.

gdm seems to attempt to start on wayland by default.

so I edited /dev/gdm/custom.conf and uncommented
WaylandEnable=false

this was enough to force gdm use X. However that was not enough.
X didn't start failing to write log file to /var/lib/gdm/.local/...

I checked the permissions and found out that /var/lib/gdm was owned by user gdm, but /var/lib/gdm/.local was owned by root.

I chown -R gdm /var/lib/gdm

After that everything works normally.

gnome-base/gdm: workaround file perm and bluetooth sound issues

Install a pulseaudio default config file which unloads bluetooth modules,
to avoid logged in users failing to load these modules upon log-in due to
device locks. As bluetooth sound may be important for a11y screen reader
over bluetooth sound, a USE flag is provided to keep loading bluetooth
modules; as this shouldn't be a common case (especially as normal sound
still works, it's just about sound over bluetooth), this USE flag is
    default disabled.

Add back file ownership tweaks, as users still somehow end up with
wrong permissions. At least if the path where Xorg sessions log file
gets written has wrong permissions, Xorg fails to start and gdm with it.

If this 3.30.3-r3 doesn't fix it for you, please file a separate bug with details.
