After today's update: !!! existing preserved libs: >>> package: media-libs/libgig-4.1.0 * - /usr/lib64/libgig/libgig.so.7 * - /usr/lib64/libgig/libgig.so.7.0.0 * used by /usr/bin/qsampler (media-sound/qsampler-0.4.3) * used by /usr/lib64/linuxsampler/liblinuxsampler.so.4.0.0 (media-sound/linuxsampler-2.0.0-r2) Use emerge @preserved-rebuild to rebuild packages using these libraries So I did: # emerge @preserved-rebuild >>> Emerging (1 of 2) media-sound/linuxsampler-2.0.0-r2::gentoo Which failed because of the following error: lscp_shell_reference.cpp:2705:7: error: expected ‘}’ at end of input "followed by a colon and then a space character <SP> and finally the in" ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ lscp_shell_reference.cpp:2705:7: error: expected ‘}’ at end of input lscp_shell_reference.cpp:2705:7: error: expected ‘,’ or ‘;’ at end of input I tried a second time: # emerge -a1 media-sound/linuxsampler [ebuild R ~] media-sound/linuxsampler-2.0.0-r2 >>> Emerging (1 of 1) media-sound/linuxsampler-2.0.0-r2::gentoo which failed again because of a different error but in the same file: lscp_shell_reference.cpp:1754:7: warning: missing terminating " character "tive sampler channel number as returned by the \"ADD CHANNEL\" or \"LI" ^ lscp_shell_reference.cpp:1754:7: error: missing terminating " character "tive sampler channel number as returned by the \"ADD CHANNEL\" or \"LI" ^~~~~~~~~ lscp_shell_reference.cpp:1753:7: error: expected ‘}’ at end of input "T_MAP <sampler-channel> <map>\n\nWhere <sampler-channel> is the respec" ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I tried a third time, and this time the compilation succeeded. This appears to be a hit and miss bug upstream. Others have made similar reports elsewhere: https://github.com/zynthian/zynthian-sys/issues/39 http://bb.linuxsampler.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3403 The above two reports also make reference to the fact that the bug comes and goes. I am filing this issue here to track progress from upstream, and to inform other gentoo users should they hit the same bug. My advice is to try your luck and emerge again...
While filing this bug report, I came across other reports from other packages, with the same error message: compile error missing terminating " character. I don't know if the causes and the fix would be similar, but in case some insight can be gained from it, here goes: Bug 36639 - pppoed 0.48-beta1-r1 compile error missing terminating " character Bug 54507 - app-sci/spectromatic-1.0: error: missing terminating " character Bug 509286 - media-video/mplayer-1.2_pre20130729 - In file included from mixer.c:27:0: config.h:120:1: error: missing terminating " character Bug 513100 - app-arch/dpkg-1.17.10 USE=dselect - In file included from curkeys.cc:30:0: curkeys.h:9:3: error: missing terminating " character Bug 542036 - app-office/libreoffice-4.3.5.2: workdir/UnoApiHeadersTarget/udkapi/normal/com/sun/star/registry/XRegistryKey.hpp:481:17: error: missing terminating " character

I've just run into this problem. Changed the ebuild to emake -j1 fixed it. Version 2.2.0.
