sys-fs/ntfs3g-2017.3.23-r1 build.log

Looks like sys-fs/fuse-2.9.7-r1 is broken with LTO enabled:

htpc ~ # nm -D /usr/lib64/libfuse.so | grep __fuse_read_cmd
                 U __fuse_read_cmd

Recompiling fuse with LTO disabled fixes the issue:
htpc ~ # nm -D /usr/lib64/libfuse.so | grep __fuse_read_cmd
000000000000c5b0 T __fuse_read_cmd

Comment 1 Guillaume Ceccarelli 2018-08-19 16:05:05 UTC
I'm reproducing the problem with libfuse.so ; in my case it broke sys-boot/grub's configure process but the missing __fuse_read_cmd symbol in libfuse.so is the same issue. Also fixed on my end when disabling LTO for sys-fs/fuse.
Comment 2 Guillaume Ceccarelli 2018-08-19 23:18:06 UTC
I'd like to provide a link my related issue on the gentooLTO overlay, as we've done some digging on the absence of the __fuse_read_cmd symbol in libfuse.so when compiled with LTO under GCC 8.2.0.

No final conclusions, but I think the discussion can be useful for anyone attempting to debug this.

The straightforward way to trigger the failure is to build fuse with -Wl,--no-undefined:

Comment 5 Sergei Trofimovich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2019-07-14 10:00:11 UTC
I think it's a bug in LTO partition code in gcc/binutils. It does not understand .symver directives.

sys-fs/fuse: disable -flto in ~arch ebuilds, bug #663518

Due to https://gcc.gnu.org/PR91186 gcc-9 in -lto mode does not do work
parition correctly for symbols introduced with `asm .symver`. That
causes linker failures in form of:
        <artificial>:(.text+0xdafe): undefined reference to `__fuse_read_cmd@'

To work it around we filter out -flto flags (already done
    for masked ebuilds).
