Action: sync for repo: gentoo, returned code = 1

User and group nobody exist:

/etc/passwd:nobody:x:65534:65534:nobody:/var/empty:/bin/false
/etc/group:nobody:x:65534:

This happens only with this mirror (which is reachable only from inside the Hetzner IP range). Using rsync.de.gentoo.org works find. Rebuilding rsync does not change anything.

net-misc/rsync-3.1.3::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="acl iconv ipv6 xattr -examples -static -stunnel"
Comment 1 Hans de Graaff gentoo-dev Security 2018-07-08 03:46:34 UTC
Did you update glibc and not restart rsync?
Comment 2 Rolf Eike Beer archtester 2018-07-10 05:27:05 UTC
I am only the rsync client. I can reproduce the issue always with one server, but it works fine with other gentoo mirrors.
Comment 3 Joakim Tjernlund 2018-08-21 12:19:22 UTC
We saw this just now and restarting the rsync server fixed the problem.
Not sure why but there was samba maint. just before this happened.
Comment 4 Thomas Deutschmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2018-08-21 15:48:01 UTC
I cannot reproduce:

> mkdir /tmp/foo
> rsync -avP rsync://[2a01:4f8:0:1::1:97]/gentoo/portage/ /tmp/foo

works for me from one of my Hetzner systems.

But the error msg you have shown is coming from server so I doubt there's a problem with net-misc/rsync package or anything we can do here. Try contacting private mirror operator. Maybe he/she can have a look.

@ Joakim Tjernlund: Are you the operator of 2a01:4f8:0:1::1:97? Or did you experience the same error, i.e. got '@ERROR: invalid gid nobody', in an own, different setup?
Comment 5 Michael Haubenwallner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2019-03-25 16:23:08 UTC
Seems we have a similar problem in Prefix (rsync.prefix.bitzolder.nl), yet with 'uid' rather than 'gid':

# rsync rsync://rsync1.prefix.bitzolder.nl/gentoo-portage-prefix
<works>

# rsync rsync://rsync2.prefix.bitzolder.nl/gentoo-portage-prefix
...
@ERROR: invalid uid nobody
rsync error: error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at main.c(1657) [Receiver=3.1.3]
# echo $?
5
Comment 6 Fabian Groffen gentoo-dev 2019-03-25 16:32:19 UTC
sorry, forgot to restart after upgrading (I never let puppet do this).
Comment 7 Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2019-03-25 16:48:11 UTC
duplicate of bug #368211 perhaps?
Comment 8 Fabian Groffen gentoo-dev 2021-01-10 20:00:31 UTC
removing @prefix, the malfunctioning was caused by not restarting rsyncd after updating glibc

We can't do anything more other than the warning we've added to the glibc ebuilds.
