This still works here. Are the gitlab tags known to be inconsistent across different gitlab-mirrors? I already asked upstream about tarballs without sha1 hashes in the root folder name and stable release archives some time ago. The davical maintainer provides them now (https://www.davical.org/downloads/). I will switch over to them.
