XScreenSaver recently started to show the message "This version of XScreenSaver is very old! Please upgrade!", which is displayed when the current version is older than 17 months. XScreenSaver 5.36 was released 10-Oct-2016; 5.37 followed on 05-Jul-2017, 5.38 on 20-Dec-2017. Could you stabilize 5.37 or 5.38? Of course I can unmask the unstable, but keeping the stable somewhat current would still be good. I'm not too familiar with Bugzilla's CC and thus didn't want to add desktop-misc@gentoo.org outright - please add them if appropriate.

commit 68aa192298206069cbcdd73fcfb91572d245087f Author: Jeroen Roovers <jer@gentoo.org> Date: Thu Mar 1 22:01:06 2018 +0100 x11-misc/xscreensaver: Stable for AMD64 HPPA x86 too.
Stable on alpha.
I've unmasked 5.38 on two x86 machines...one using nvidia-drivers and one using nouveau with both using fluxbox, and so far everything seems to be working fine.

(In reply to ernsteiswuerfel from comment #8) > USE="new-login" pulls in a lot of ~ppc deps. That is not true. It's USE=gdm that pulls those in, but the powerpc profile has: profiles/arch/powerpc/use.stable.mask:gdm so you're doing something wrong here.

I can confirm that gdm is masked via profiles/arch/powerpc/use.stable.mask on my setup. And I do not override these settings through files in in /etc/portage/, nor do I use gdm in my make.conf or package.use. Yet strangely USE="new-login" pulls in these deps as outlined.
