Just another perfectly working old app being removed from portage, I guess, and without a suggested replacement. Lyx only supports noweb for its literate programming support (not that I use lyx any more, since it's an awful text editor), so I suppose I should file a bug against the above lyx change, but that would probably just result in the removal of lyx from portage (there are no dependencies within portage on it, so it's free to be removed as well). The only reason I can imagine ctan calling it obsolete is that there is a noweb 3, which is apparently not even in ctan, and definitely not in portage, probably because the author himself recommends 2 (quoted from the noweb page): Newcomers should know that versions numbered 2.x are mature and may be preferred to version 3. As of 21 July 2011, the current supported version is version 2.11b. Then again, maybe ctan just calls anything that hasn't been updated in the last year obsolete, much like gentoo.
I can only heartfeltly agree with Thomas. One would like to think Gentoo maintainers preferred packages of this caliber -- written by Ph.D. computer scientist and researcher in programming languages, noweb works to the spec, and hasn't needed a feature tweak or bugfix for almost two decades, which is darn impressive. And the program is still maintained; a 2.12 release is in the making at https://github.com/nrnrnr/noweb Sorry for ranting, feeling better now!
