Had the same error, but then noticed that I had: >=app-text/poppler-0.61.1 in my package.mask. After removing it, a @world update emerged app-text/poppler-0.61.1 *first*, and then texlive-core built successfully. The poppler dep should probably be changed to >=app-text/poppler-0.61.1.
The patch makes texlive-core depend on >=app-text/poppler-0.58.0 here.
