Do tests pass with dev-lang/R installed? Then we could add this as test dependency.
now I do get :

(In reply to Toralf Förster from comment #11) > Created attachment 508428 [details] > app-emacs:ess-17.11:20171205-203545.log I am getting the same failure in test 7: Test ess-r-namespaced-eval-no-srcref-in-errors condition: (ert-test-failed ((should (string= (substring output 0 ...) error-msg)) :form (string= "Error in ss(file, echo =" "Error: unexpected symbol") :value nil)) FAILED 7/30 ess-r-namespaced-eval-no-srcref-in-errors @Neil (adding to CC): Do tests succeed for you?
I've not encountered any problems with ess-17.11 failing to find R. I have bumped R locally to =dev-lang/R-3.4.3 but doubt that would be the case here. Dumb question but is dev-lang/R installed on the tinderbox the original report is from? =dev-lang/R doesn't appear as a dependency in the ess ebuilds.

Some tests with R fail. In addition, dev-lang/R isn't keyworded on all arches. Restricting tests for now.
