Description Oliver Freyermuth 2017-10-24 18:10:42 UTC
As learnt from the mailing list (and by personally using Singularity), and by reading the code, e.g.:

https://github.com/singularityware/singularity/commit/78af5f54b814466fe88d362688b78e016ba4c618#diff-b3fb1fb02c192e0be6fee00045236e40

sys-fs/squashfs-tools is an official runtime requirement.

Since upstream does not seem to care to announce such things in release notes, as is good and common practice, I opened an issue with them here:
https://github.com/singularityware/singularity/issues/1090
